KUWALA
Chikwawa district in Malawi faces recurrent floods and droughts, disrupting agriculture and endangering food security, while exacerbating environmental degradation. Recent El Niño-induced dry weather has worsened conditions, impacting 122,632 households, with 68,285 requiring humanitarian assistance, a significant increase from 2023. Among these, 11,608 are children under 5, 3,414 are pregnant or lactating women, and 15,706 are adolescent girls and boys.

Objectives

Immediate Food Relief: To provide immediate food assistance to 380 beneficiaries, who are on ART (antiretroviral therapy), including men, women, and young people living with HIV in Chikwawa district.

Sustainable Agriculture Support: To enhance food security by distributing farm inputs and tools to facilitate sustainable agricultural practices.

Transportation for Health Campaigns: To improve mobility for Young People living with HIV to enhance the effectiveness of the HIV Y+ Plus campaign.

Livelihood Improvement: To promote economic resilience among People Living with HIV (PLHIV) through the distribution of livestock and support for agricultural initiatives.
Activities

Food Distribution:

Identify and register 380 beneficiaries who are on ART.

Procure and distribute essential food supplies to the beneficiaries.

Agricultural Support:

Procure and distribute maize and vegetable seeds (tomatoes, onions, and okra).

Provide farm tools such as water cans and other irrigation equipment.

Conduct training sessions on sustainable farming practices and irrigation techniques.

Transport Support for Health Campaigns:

Identify and form two groups of Young People living with HIV.

Procure and distribute 10 bicycles to these groups.

Livestock Distribution:

Identify 8 Support Groups of People Living with HIV.

Procure and distribute 80 pigs among these groups.

Train the groups on livestock management and implement a pass-on initiative for sustainability​

Establishment of Bakeries

Economically empower women by providing them with skills in baking and small-scale entrepreneurship.

Women in the support groups will be trained to bake a variety of products tailored to meet the specific demands of their communities.

Sustainable source of income for women and enhanced food security within their households and communities.​​
